Aug. 12, 2017: Crossing the Delaware

Bill Deaton is putting together Canoe and Brew’s first trip on the Delaware, and it looks like it’ll be fantastic!

We’ll be going from Narrowsburg, N.Y. to the Zane Grey Landing in Lackawaxen, Pa.  That comes to about 12.5 miles through a canyon that has always made us yearn to paddle as we drive between Pennsylvania and New York.  There’s even a waterfall that can be trekked to just off the river near the end.

It’ll be a little more exciting than our usual flatwater trips.  There are four sets of Class I and Class II rapids along the way, which, frankly, is part of why we’re so excited about this venture.  For those who have never been on choppy water, this would be a gentle way to get started. Class I rapids are really nothing more than riffles, with easy self-rescue.  Class II rapids are for novices — clear wide channels, easily avoidable rocks and mid-sized waves. Self rescue is also fairly easy, plus you’ll have friends along to help. map10

Lander’s River Trips  will be providing our drivers-only shuttle – $97.20 for up to 13 riders.  We’ll split the cost between whoever shows up. You can also rent boats from Lander’s through their Minisink base — make the arrangements directly with them.  Renters will have to paddle two miles further than everyone else to get to the Minisink base — there are logistic issues for the company loading and unloading boats on the Pennsylvania side.

We’re going to Shrewd Fox Brewery afterward for libations – Bill says they’re great, and he has excellent taste.  We’re still working on shipping in the food – we’ll let you know as soon as we do how that will be handled.

Some of us are planning to camp out the night before and/or after.  Lander’s has limited camping at its Minisink Base, and it seems that would be the easiest place to start calling. Camping is also available at Kittatinny Canoes, Cedar Rapids and there are also a few places to lodge The Settlers Inn, Ledges Hotel, Woodloch Resort, and The Lodge at Woodloch — A Destination Spa all 20-30 minutes from the pull-out, and The Spring House Commons Bed & Breakfast in Barryville.
